Kelly Slater, pro surfer and ocean photographer, created Outerknown out of frustration for the lack of sustainability in the clothing he wore. Outerknown provides sustainable everyday wear as well as swimwear, accessories, and shoe's for men and women that they can show off knowing that the items are good for the environment and for the people.

What makes them sustainable?

Outerknown is the essence of what it is to be sustainable. They are completely transparent about all parts of their business, and every item is made to last using Fair Trade Certified materials or recycled plastic pulled from the oceans. They minimize their impact on the environment wherever possible by practicing sustainability on all ends.

Do they have ethical policies in place?

Yes. Aside from their eco-friendly and Fair Trade recycled materials, they ensure a fair and living wage for all employees throughout their supply chain through the Fair Labor Association. They do use animal products such as organic marino wool.

Is their shipping carbon neutral or sustainable?

There is no evidence of carbon off-setting or carbon-neutral shipping.

Is their packaging sustainable or recyclable?

They are working on making their packaging more sustainable. They will eliminate plastic packaging from operations by replacing all polybags (plastic) with Vela™ bags. They use plant fibres for much of their packaging, and the majority of their packaging is already made from at least 90% recycled paper.
